"Now that our focus is on a new beginning for Bungie, we are getting to work on the development of our next games," the studio writes in a blog post. "That is why we are releasing the final live service update for Destiny 2 on June 9, 2026, to begin that new journey as a studio."
The company emphasizes that Destiny 2 will remain playable, just like the first Destiny game. However, no new content will be added.
The final update is called Monument of Triumph and reintroduces previous content from Destiny 2, alongside various other additions. "Many of the changes in this final update are aimed at ensuring that Destiny 2 remains a place where players love to return," the studio states.
Future of Destiny
The future of the Destiny franchise is not yet known. Bungie will therefore be working on new games, but is not saying what kind of titles they will be. "As soon as we have more news about Destiny, you will hear it first," the studio stated.
Bungie released the first Destiny game for consoles in 2014. It was the first major game the company developed since discontinuing the Halo series. Destiny 2 followed three years later. Both Destiny games received various expansions and other live-service content throughout their lifespan.
In 2022, Bungie was acquired by Sony, which was working hard on new live-service games at the time. Earlier this year, Bungie released a new shooter, Marathon. That is also a live-service game.
