Today, 2K and Gearbox Software announced that the first story expansion for Borderlands 4, titled Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned, will launch on March 26, 2026. The new DLC introduces an all-new Vault Hunter, C4SH; a brand-new zone packed with missions, activities, and collectibles; intense boss fights; mountains of loot; and much more.
Uncover the Mysteries of the Whispering Glacier
As a sinister cosmic entity threatens Kairos and madness spreads through the frozen winds, players will team up with the fearless mechanic Ellie — daughter of Moxxi — on a mission to destroy an alien monolith and enter the cursed Vault of the Damned. Guided by returning fan-favorite Mancubus Bloodtooth, players will venture through the Whispering Glacier, a frozen wasteland littered with abandoned shipwrecks and dark secrets.
Longtime Borderlands fans will recognize returning characters such as Mancubus, Pickle, and Crazy Earl. However, the story is fully standalone, meaning newcomers can jump right in without prior knowledge of the series.
Beyond its brutal arctic setting and horrifying scenery, the Whispering Glacier is filled with new story missions, side quests, activities, and collectibles. Later missions allow players to destroy gigantic pulsating flesh masses that unlock new areas, loot, and puzzles. A brand-new World Boss mechanic will also transport players who interact with eldritch trees into a nightmare dimension where a random endgame boss awaits.
To access the Whispering Glacier region, players must own Story Pack 1 and complete the mission “A Lot to Process” in the Fadefields. The content is recommended for Vault Hunters level 13 and above. Players can also create a new level-13 character that starts directly in the expansion content.
Alongside Story Pack 1, a major update for Borderlands 4 will introduce highly requested shared progression between characters. New characters on the same account will share map progression, SDU tokens, Hover Drives, cosmetic rewards, and activity progression. Some fast-travel locations will still remain locked behind campaign progress. Gearbox also confirmed that cross-platform save support is still in development for a future update.
Play as the New Vault Hunter: C4SH the Rogue
Players will be able to explore the icy frontier as C4SH the Rogue, the first of two new Vault Hunters coming to Borderlands 4. C4SH is a CasinoBot who gained a new lease on life after winning a high-stakes card game and obtaining a magical deck of cards that grants supernatural powers.
For most, the deck would be a cursed artifact — but for a robot who has manipulated casinos and battlefields through statistical precision, unpredictability finally makes him feel alive. C4SH thrives on risk, constantly betting on himself and embracing chaos.
One of his signature Action Skills, Sleight of Hand, allows him to draw cards from a randomized deck and throw them to unleash powerful magical effects. Like the other Vault Hunters in Borderlands 4, C4SH features three unique Action Skills and three branching skill trees packed with passive bonuses and augments.
Gearbox confirmed that a full gameplay reveal and cinematic character trailer for C4SH will arrive next week ahead of the expansion launch.
